Elgin Historic American Buildings Survey / Northern Illinois Asylum for the Insane Architectural documentation with photographs of the former Northern Illinois Asylum For The Insane at Elgin, before it was demolished in 1993. This asylum, which opened in 1872, was designed following the "Kirkbride Plan" ( as was the Eastern Michigan Asylum at Pontiac ). Something like this should be done for every historic building that is demolished.

Abandoned Insane Asylums Here is a good site with plenty of recent photographs of two "Kirkbride" asylums that I have always wanted to visit: Worcester, Massachucetts (opened 1877) and Buffalo, New York (opened 1880). Also, there are photographs from Milledgeville, Georgia (including some of the old "Kirkbride" building), and then the "Kirkbride" building at the former Northern Michigan Asylum in Traverse City, known as "Building 50".
